The city of Cartagena witnessed an emotional moment last night with the traditional lighting of the flame, marking the start of the Carthagineses and Romans 2025 Festival, which is recognised as an event of international tourist interest.

This symbolic ceremony kicks off a weekend packed with activities combining history, culture, and family entertainment, including workshops, theatrical performances, and historical reenactments recalling the Second Punic War.

A programme to relive history

Among Friday's highlights, speaker Elena Ruiz, archaeologist and director of the Roman Theatre Museum, delivered a speech emphasising the importance of archaeological recovery linked to the festival and the unwavering support of the 5,000 active festival participants.

The event was attended by notable officials such as Mayor Noelia Arroyo, who stressed community unity through these celebrations that transform ancient conflicts into messages of peace. Recognition was also given to cultural and social contributions with the presentation of the Festero Honoris Causa title to the Cartagena Carnival Federation.

The evening featured the dramatic reenactment of the foundation of Qart-Hadast, depicting the Barca family’s history, city founding, and internal conflicts, followed by a magical nighttime visit to the Roman Theatre under moonlight.

Accessibility played a key role with innovative measures including Navilens codes for visually impaired persons, adapted restrooms, and comprehensive services to ensure an inclusive experience.

Throughout the weekend, a variety of historical routes, family musicals, and iconic reenactments such as the destruction of Saguntum will offer an immersive dive into antiquity and Cartagena’s rich heritage.
