The City Council of Cartagena has completed restoration and informational signage works on the iconic La Torre Ciega funerary monument, located near the ancient Vía Augusta in the Torreciega neighbourhood. This project, with an investment exceeding €40,000, is aimed at highlighting one of the city's most significant Roman relics.

The intervention involved cleaning the surroundings, planting grass and native species, as well as installing two technical advisory-backed panels that explain the monument’s history and uniqueness. New lighting and street furniture, including benches, were added to improve the area for residents and visitors.

A comprehensive enhancement plan for Torreciega

Councillor Belén Romero emphasised that the restoration forms part of a broader initiative to boost quality of life and preserve local heritage. The municipality has allocated or plans to allocate over €110,000 in Torreciega for complementary improvements.

These include building a pedestrian walkway to maintain accessibility during rain, installing shading structures in the children’s playground with nearly €20,000 of investment, and upgrading the sports court alongside creating a petanque pitch.

Moreover, shock-absorbing flooring was installed in another playground for child safety, and accessibility enhancements were made on Calle Escritor Horacio. These collective actions demonstrate a strong commitment from the City Council and Mayor Noelia Arroyo to provide safe, accessible, and quality public spaces for all residents.

The restoration and upgrade of the funerary monument's vicinity represent a strategic integration of heritage preservation, mobility, and accessibility, addressing neighbourhood needs and community commitments.
