A man in his sixties was seriously injured on Saturday evening in Cartagena after being stabbed in the neck while apparently withdrawing cash from an ATM on Ribera de San Javier street. Witnesses said the attacker approached from behind and inflicted the wound shortly before 7pm.

Local police and a mobile emergency unit from the 061 service attended the scene. The victim, found unconscious and bleeding, was taken to the Santa Lucía University Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery.

The assailant fled the scene on foot. The case is now being investigated by the National Police. Unofficial sources say the suspect may be identified and is reportedly a person already known to law enforcement; he could face charges for attempted murder.

Initial calls to the emergency number 091 were hampered because patrols were occupied with another serious incident in Cartagena — the death of a man who fell down the stairs at his home — which delayed immediate police attendance.

Authorities continue their search and have asked any witnesses to come forward with information to help locate the suspect as the investigation remains ongoing.
