The Civil Guard has dismantled a large-scale illegal marijuana plantation at a property in Molinos Marfagones, Cartagena. Authorities discovered 146 mature plants cultivated inside a clandestine greenhouse set up in the garage. A significant amount of processed buds ready for sale and specialised cultivation equipment were also seized.
In addition to the drugs, officers found two firearms: a modified blank-firing pistol capable of shooting live rounds and a bolt-action Mauser rifle. The electricity supply was illegally tapped through a sophisticated hidden connection to avoid detection.
This police operation, triggered after reports of a strong marijuana smell around the property, raises alarms amid the growing presence of marijuana clubs and bars where excessive consumption is increasingly common among young people. Experts warn about the rising risks of dependency and lack of attention related to this trend in youth populations.
The arrested couple, a 44-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman both Spanish nationals, face charges for drug cultivation, production, and trafficking, as well as illegal possession of weapons and electricity fraud. All seized items and case files have been submitted to the Cartagena court for further proceedings.
