On Friday, 19 September, Cartagena came alive with the vibrant atmosphere of the Carthagineses y Romanos Festival, one of its most iconic events. The historic city centre echoed with excitement as the traditional pregonillo announced the start of ten days dedicated to reliving episodes from the Second Punic War.

Mayor Noelia Arroyo welcomed the festival participants at the doors of the City Hall, where at 9:30 pm the opening speech was delivered by Elena Ruiz Valderas, Director of the Roman Theatre Museum. This official ceremony marked the start of a program rich in historical reenactments and activities suited for all ages.

The sacred fire lighting and enduring traditions

Prior to the opening speech, at 8:00 pm, the sacred fire was lit in the Molinete Archaeological Park, a symbolic moment where priestesses, priests, and vestals invoked the protection of Carthaginian and Roman gods over the festivities. The Troops and Legions, essential pillars of the festival, actively took part in these rituals and in the proclamation event itself.

Recognised as an international tourist attraction, the Carthagineses y Romanos Festival not only brings to life the conquests and struggles between the Iberians, Carthaginians, and Romans but also reflects the dedication of participants and the Cartagena community to preserve and share their cultural heritage. This year’s program features over two hundred activities including exhibitions, reenactments, guided tours, and theatrical performances.

Moreover, participants can enjoy free access to museums and cultural centres throughout the municipality, encouraging a deeper understanding of local history. The celebration coincides with the European Mobility Week, which includes bike routes and inclusive events over the weekend.

Tonight and in the coming days, events such as the founding of Qart-Hadast, legendary battles, and Roman and Carthaginian traditions will take centre stage, cementing Cartagena’s position as the Mediterranean capital of historic and cultural festivals.
